Yes — December is an excellent time to visit Costa Rica. The dry season has just begun, daytime temperatures sit in the low to mid-80s°F, and the Pacific coast sees very little rainfall. For surfers, it’s one of the most comfortable months: warm water, manageable waves, and long sunny days.

Weather in Costa Rica in December

December marks the start of Costa Rica’s dry season (verano). Days are warm and sunny — perfect for surfing, hiking, and beach time. Evenings cool off noticeably, so it’s worth packing a light jacket for after-dark excursions.

Along the Central Pacific coast near Dominical — where Kalon Surf is located — afternoon breezes pick up in December. Locals call these the “holiday winds” (vientos alisios), and they signal that the Costa Rican summer is arriving. The air feels fresh, the skies are clear, and the jungle is still lush from the rains that just ended.

Surfing in Costa Rica in December

December waves on the Pacific side tend to be smaller and more consistent — ideal conditions for beginners learning to surf. The water is warm (around 80°F / 27°C), so you won’t need a wetsuit. For intermediate surfers, the dry season offers clean, forgiving waves that are perfect for building technique and confidence.

At Kalon Surf, our coaches take you to uncrowded breaks near Dominical where conditions are matched to your level. With daily video analysis and a 3:1 coaching ratio, you’ll progress quickly — most guests are riding green waves by mid-week.

The Holidays at Kalon Surf

Spending the holidays in a warm country with no snow feels different — but it has its own kind of magic. At Kalon, we put up a small Christmas tree in the resort and the week takes on a relaxed, festive atmosphere. You’re sharing three-course dinners with a small group of guests, watching sunsets from the infinity pool, and surfing on Christmas morning if the tides are right.

It’s a holiday season stripped down to the things that actually matter: good food, warm weather, time outdoors, and the company of people who are genuinely enjoying themselves. Many of our December guests tell us it’s the most memorable holiday they’ve had in years.

Things to Do in Costa Rica in December

Beyond surfing, December offers plenty to explore:

National parks: Dry, sunny weather makes this an ideal time to visit parks like Manuel Antonio or Corcovado. Wildlife is active and trails are accessible.

Whale and turtle watching: Humpback whales are present along the Pacific coast from December through March. Leatherback turtles nest on Caribbean beaches during this period as well.

Local festivals: The Festival de la Luz in San José (second week of December) is a spectacular light parade. On December 26th, the El Tope — a traditional equestrian parade — fills the streets with riders, music, and food stalls. And December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, is marked by impressive fireworks displays across the country.

Rest day excursions from Kalon: On your mid-week rest day, you can go horseback riding to a waterfall, zip-lining through the canopy, visit the town of Dominical, or simply spend the afternoon by the pool. Our team arranges everything.

Good to Know: Flights and Costs

December is high season in Costa Rica, so expect flight prices to be higher than average — particularly around Christmas and New Year’s. If you have flexibility, the first two weeks of December tend to be slightly less expensive than the holiday weeks. Booking early helps, especially for all-inclusive stays like Kalon where availability is limited to 10–12 guests per week.

Book Your December Trip

If you’re looking for a holiday that combines surfing, great food, and genuine relaxation in one of the most beautiful parts of Costa Rica, December is a strong choice. Get in touch with our team and we’ll help you find the right week — whether it’s a couples getaway, a family trip, or a solo adventure. If you’re also considering the green season in May, that’s a completely different experience — bigger swells, fewer crowds, and the jungle at its most vibrant.
