If there’s one question we hear most at Kalon, our all-inclusive surf camp in Costa Rica, it’s whether we welcome beginners. The answer is a resounding yes — and more than that, beginners are the majority of our guests. About 60% have never surfed before, and another 20% have only tried once or twice.
The big secret? Becoming a surfer isn’t only about athletic ability. It’s about having the right conditions, the right guidance, and the patience to trust the process. We’re based alongside costa rica’s most scenic surf beaches with exceptionally warm waters on the edge of the jungle, and we make sure every guest has a superb experience — whether they’re catching their first whitewater wave or working on clean bottom turns.
Why Costa Rica’s South Pacific Coast Is Ideal for Beginner Surfers
Too often, people who love the ocean feel reluctant to learn to surf, or they’ve tried once somewhere and decided it’s not for them. The problem is almost always where, not who. Location matters more than most people realize.
Many popular surf spots in Costa Rica aren’t safe or suitable for learners — especially those on the Caribbean coastline, where heavy swells and strong currents challenge even experienced surfers. Crowded tourist beaches may have decent waves, but if you feel rushed, self-conscious, or lost in a large group lesson, meaningful progress is almost impossible. And cold water with a tight wetsuit? That makes surfing feel harder than it actually is.

This is why where you learn matters as much as how. At Kalon, the water is warm year-round — no wetsuit needed. The coaching is personalized at a 3:1 guest-to-coach ratio, so you’re never lost in a crowd. And our coaches take you to uncrowded beaches selected daily based on conditions, meaning you practice on waves that match your actual level.
The Biggest Misconceptions Beginners Have When Learning to Surf
Every guest progresses at their own pace, and the exclusive, private setting at Kalon means you can spend as much time on the water as you need — with downtime for exploring the rainforest, hiking through the jungle, or relaxing beside our infinity pool to rest and recharge.

Why Great Coaching Matters Most
Surfing is a technical sport, and for beginners, the way experienced surfers intuitively position themselves and read waves can feel impossible to replicate. This is where the standard of coaching makes the difference.
At Kalon, we don’t ask you to guess. Our coaching team guides you through the process one step at a time — starting with a pool technique session on your first morning, where you work on paddle positioning and pop-up mechanics before you ever touch the ocean. From there, each session builds on the last.
We use a color-band system to track your focus areas — foot positioning, chest posture, visual focus, knee bend, hip movement — so both you and your coach have a clear picture of where you are and what to work on next. Daily video analysis lets you see your own surfing, which is often the single biggest accelerator. Guests regularly tell us they improve more in one week here than they did in months of casual surfing at home.
We work in tune with the water and the conditions as they come, changing day to day, providing real feedback about technique and customized progression that helps you keep improving long after your week with us ends.
