Costa Rica is one of the world’s most scenic surf destinations — beaches backdropped by dense jungle, coastlines where the rainforest practically touches the sand. Thousands of people travel here each year to stay at Costa Rica at all-inclusive surf camps like Kalon and catch waves in places like Dominical, Playa Hermosa, and Pavones.
Having lived on this coast since 2011, I’ve had the privilege of surfing most of these beaches over the years. Here’s an honest look at what each one offers — and what to know before you go.
| Surf Beach | Best For | Wave Type | Experience Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dominical | Authentic surf culture, consistent waves | Powerful beach break | Intermediate–Advanced |
| Playa Hermosa | Strong waves, dramatic scenery | Powerful beach break | Advanced |
| Pavones | Long rides, remote surf | Left-hand point break | Intermediate–Advanced |
| Tamarindo | Beginner surfing, surf schools | Gentle beach break | Beginner |
| Playa Negra | Technical reef surfing | Hollow reef break | Advanced |
| Playa Guiones | Learning, relaxed atmosphere | Soft rolling beach break | Beginner–Intermediate |
Dominical
Dominical sits at the edge of the Osa Peninsula and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places to surf in Central America. The beach is long, often uncrowded, and flanked by dense rainforest that gives the whole stretch an untouched, timeless feeling.

Kalon Surf calls Dominical home. Our resort sits at 1,200 feet of elevation overlooking the coast, close to some of the most consistent breaks in the region. For beginners, our coaches select the right spots along the beach based on the day’s conditions — and at a 3:1 ratio, every session is tailored to where you actually are in your progression. For experienced surfers, Dominical delivers powerful, reliable waves without the crowds you’ll find up north.
Playa Hermosa
Just south of Jacó, Playa Hermosa has a reliable and powerful beach break that draws experienced surfers looking for something more intense. The dark volcanic sand and dramatic coastal mountain backdrop make it one of the more visually striking beaches in the country. This is not a beginner beach — the waves here demand respect and experience.
Pavones
Pavones is famous among dedicated surfers as one of the longest rideable left-hand point breaks on the planet. On a big swell, rides can stretch for several uninterrupted minutes. It’s remote, difficult to reach, and that’s part of its appeal — the surfers who make it here tend to be serious about it.
Tamarindo
On the Nicoya Peninsula, Tamarindo has long been the entry point for travelers discovering Costa Rica’s surf for the first time. The waves are gentler and more forgiving, making it a good place for absolute beginners to get their feet wet. The trade-off is heavy tourism, crowded lineups, and a commercial atmosphere that feels very different from the South Pacific. If you’re trying to understand what beginners should know about surfing, Tamarindo is an option — but it’s not the only one.
Playa Negra
Located on the Caribbean side near Puerto Viejo, Playa Negra offers a completely different experience. A heavy, hollow reef break that rewards surfers comfortable in strong, fast waves. If you’re getting into more advanced waves, bring an expert and evaluate your surf instructor’s credentials before you hit the water — this is not a place to wing it.
Playa Guiones
Playa Guiones sits in Nosara, a wellness-focused town often chosen by families and yoga practitioners visiting Costa Rica. The waves are soft and rolling, making it approachable for beginners and intermediate surfers who want a mellow session. The town itself is quiet and well-maintained, though it carries a higher price point than many other coastal areas.
Surfing Costa Rica’s Best Beaches
The beauty of surfing in Costa Rica is the diversity. From thundering reef breaks to gentle beginner rollers, from packed tourist towns to quiet, jungle-backed shorelines — there’s a beach for every level and every temperament.
If you’re considering catching waves in Dominical and the surrounding coast, Kalon’s all-inclusive stays are designed for exactly that kind of purposeful exploration — where every day in the water is guided, every evening is relaxed, and the hardest decision you’ll make is whether to watch the sunset from the pool or the balcony.
