The gear you need for surf camp is probably less than you think — especially if you’re staying at an all-inclusive surf camp in Costa Rica like Kalon. We provide all surf equipment — boards, rash guards, everything you need in the water. We keep a collection of around 60 high-quality boards in a wide range of sizes and shapes, so you’ll always be matched with the right board for your level.
That said, a few personal items make a real difference in how comfortable and prepared you feel throughout the week. After hosting thousands of guests, here’s what we’ve found actually matters — and what you can leave at home.
| Item Category | What to Bring | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Swimwear | 3–4 quick-dry swimsuits | Allows time for suits to dry between sessions in the tropical humidity |
| Sun Protection | Reef-safe sunscreen, surf cap, rash guard, quality sunglasses | Protects skin from tropical UV — stronger than you’re used to |
| Spare Surf Gear | Reef booties, extra fins if you’re particular | Helpful for rocky entry points, though we provide all equipment |
| Post-Surf Care | Aloe vera, antiseptic cream, bandages | Treats minor sunburn and small scrapes quickly |
| Health Essentials | Hydration tablets, antihistamines, pain relievers | Helps with adjusting to tropical surfing climate |
| Casual Clothing | Lightweight evening clothes, long-sleeve shirt | Comfortable for three-course dinners and cooler evenings at elevation |

What You Don’t Need to Bring
You don’t need to bring surfboards, wetsuits, or any major equipment. At Kalon, all of that is included. You don’t need formal clothing — dinners are relaxed. You don’t need towels — we provide them. And you definitely don’t need to overpack. Most guests tell us they brought too much, not too little.
The essentials really come down to sun protection, a few swimsuits, something comfortable for evenings, and your personal health basics. That’s it.
Health and Wellness Essentials
It’s smart to bring a basic personal kit for minor issues: aloe vera for sun exposure, antiseptic cream for small scrapes (reef rash is real), hydration tablets, and any personal medications you take regularly. Understanding common surf injuries and first aid in Costa Rica will help you feel more prepared — though at Kalon, our coaches are trained in water safety and first aid, and we’re well-equipped to handle minor issues on-site.
Packing Light, Surfing Right
At Kalon, we take care of the details so you can pack light and focus on the experience. Your room has a private balcony for drying gear, an ensuite rain shower, luxury linens, and everything you need to be comfortable. The less time you spend thinking about logistics, the more time you spend in the water.
