Understanding how to progress from beginner to intermediate surfing is really about knowing yourself and your limits. Many new surfers want to tackle big waves before they are ready, but first come the fundamentals: standing up, balancing, and basic control. During surfing lessons in Costa Rica at Kalon Surf, we help beginners master those fundamentals so the next level comes naturally.
The Fundamentals
Everyone crawls before they walk, and surfing is no different. First you paddle out and choose a wave, the easy part. Standing up is the hardest step for most beginners, and once you have it, balance comes next. Only after catching a few waves should you think about controlling the board, which calls on a different set of muscles. Master those in calm, steady waves and you are ready to move up.
Understanding the Ocean
One of the first steps up is learning to read the ocean. For beginners that sounds like “this one looks good.” More advanced surfers let several waves pass before choosing the one they want. With their local knowledge, our Costa Rican coaches teach you how to spot the right wave and understand how weather affects surfing conditions.
Ride the Wave Face
Beginners rarely surf the full wave; they wait until it has broken and ride the foam toward shore. Once you have balance and basic control, it is time to try the face. This is why reading waves matters, you do not want one that is too big. Start small, paddle fast, and aim to stand before the wave breaks. Do not chase the biggest part; starting on the smaller end is a great way to practice before taking on more.
Gaining Full Control
The final step to intermediate is full control of the board: changing direction, trimming to keep it level, holding speed, and shifting your weight smoothly. With those, you are ready for larger waves and more complex maneuvers. The key is to stay humble, the ocean is one of the most powerful forces on earth.
