Building confidence as a beginner surfer is all about consistency. No single wave makes you a confident surfer; it is the series of waves, wipeouts, and climbing back on that builds the confidence to take on bigger ones. One of the best ways to get there is surfing lessons in Costa Rica at Kalon Surf, where an expert team helps you develop the fundamentals. In the meantime, here are a few ways to build confidence on your own.
Choose the Right Wave
Surfing has a way of humbling you. As a beginner, choose waves that match your skill level. Big waves look exciting, but taking one on before you are ready leads to a painful wipeout. Do not be afraid to let a great wave pass so you can catch the next, easier one. Once your confidence grows, there will be plenty of great waves to ride.
Stay Consistent
One hour of surfing three times a week beats an all-day session once a month. Familiarity with the board and regular time in the waves let your body and brain adapt. Surfers who go out only occasionally often struggle to build the confidence to stay on the board. Getting back out there tomorrow is what tips the odds in your favor.
Surf With Others
The best way of learning to surf as an adult is with the help of people more experienced than you, whether a qualified coach at Kalon or better surfers at your home beach. Next time you see someone doing it well, ask for a few pointers. If you wipe out and are not sure why, ask someone who saw it. Admitting mistakes, laughing them off, and asking for advice is one of the fastest ways to build skill and confidence. And do not be afraid to say you do not know something; surfing terminology can be confusing, and most of the surf community is happy to help.
