Picking the right place to learn how to ride waves can make the difference between a frustrating week and one that genuinely changes how you feel in the ocean. To choose the right surf school, look at the coach-to-guest ratio, the teaching method behind its surfing lessons in Costa Rica, the quality of the waves, how well the program matches your level, and whether the overall experience fits the kind of trip you have in mind.

Here is what we would weigh before you book.

Group Size and Coaching Ratio

Look for a low guest-to-coach ratio, so your coach can actually watch you surf and give you the attention you need to improve. In a crowded lesson you might get a few minutes of real feedback and spend the rest of your time waiting your turn.

In a small group, a coach can read each wave you catch and give feedback while it still matters. At Kalon we keep sessions to around three guests per coach, so no one gets lost in the crowd.

Teaching Method

Ask how a school actually teaches. The most effective coaching breaks surfing into learnable pieces rather than pushing you into waves before you are ready.

At Kalon, we drill the pop-up on the beach before you are in the water and use calm-water sessions to build your paddling technique, so you know these skills inside out before you paddle out. We also film your sessions for daily video analysis, so you can see exactly what your coach sees. That is the thing that turns practice into lasting progress.

Waves That Match Your Level

A good coach reads the ocean each morning and matches you to the right break: gentle whitewater for your first pop-up, open green waves when you are ready. Be wary of one-size-fits-all lessons that put beginners and advanced surfers on the same peak. The best setups guide you to uncrowded breaks suited to the day and your ability, which means more waves and faster learning.

As one of our guests, Mav V., put it: “surf lessons are tailored to individual needs, with knowledgeable instructors who are particularly adept at guiding beginners, and the daily video reviews offer valuable insights for progress.”

The Whole Experience

Surfing is tiring, and the hours out of the water matter just as much. Consider whether a school is a high-energy party camp or a calmer place to recharge. If you want a week that leaves you restored, look for genuine hospitality, good food, and the space to recover, whether that is yoga, a massage, or an unhurried evening.

When you compare options, notice whether a school describes a specific kind of guest and experience, or simply promises to please everyone. The former is usually built around a clear idea of what a good week looks like. Kalon is purposefully built for people who value structured coaching, comfort, and calm.
