The best surfing lessons Costa Rica offers do not start with standing on a board. Learning the fundamentals and feeling confident in the water are what make your first wave exhilarating instead of overwhelming.
With the right coaching, the roughly 60% of Kalon guests who arrive as complete beginners can often stand within a day or two, and many are riding unbroken green waves by the end of the week. Catching your first wave is not about perfect balance or bravery. It is about building one skill at a time, until something that felt impossible starts to feel natural.
Why Catching Waves Starts Before You Reach the Ocean
One thing that surprises new surfers is that learning to pop up does not begin in the water. It is the end result of a few progressive steps:
- Beach drills for body positioning and timing
- Calm-water sessions to practice paddling and breathing
- Daily surf sessions on beaches with safe, consistent waves
- Video reviews so you can see your progress from the outside
Standing up is an exciting milestone, but it is the product of everything that comes before it. Hand placement, body position, timing, and repetition all work together, and the movement relies far less on strength than most beginners expect. Focused practice builds the muscle memory, so by the time you are up against your first whitewater wave, the motion already feels familiar.
How the Right Waves Help You Learn
Conditions matter as much as effort. Crowded beaches and heavy breaks are the last place a beginner should start, so our coaches read the surf every morning. We are lucky to have quiet, beautiful beaches near the resort that give beginners the room to learn without feeling rushed. If you want to know where those breaks are, our guide to the best surf spots is a good place to start.
Kalon sits in the Osa Peninsula, a world-class surfing region with pristine beaches and reliable breaks. There are demanding waves along the coast for advanced surfers, but we focus much of our coaching on friendly waves close to Kalon, set right in front of the rainforest. That gives every guest the space to progress, whether it is your first pop-up or a more powerful wave than you have caught before.
Former guest Jeff A. shared: “My wife had never surfed before and was doing great by the end of the week. I was amazed at how the surf coaches were able to get so many people who had never surfed out onto and riding green waves by the end of the week.”
Why Steady Progress Is the Best Way to Catch Your First Wave
Learning to surf rarely means standing up on your very first try, and that is exactly how it should be. Our approach mirrors the way we think about the whole week: thoughtful, unhurried, built around you. Since Kalon Surf began in 2011, founders Kjeld Schigt and Silene Vega Delgado have kept a single idea at the center of it, that guests should leave happier than when they arrived.
Coaching here is never pressured, and no one is measured against anyone else. Every new skill, whether a first pop-up, a clean paddle, or a ride on a green wave, is worth celebrating. We love it when guests go home understanding the ocean a little better, carrying the memory of the very first wave they caught in Costa Rica.
