One of the most common questions we get before a guest arrives is: “Will I have time to do anything besides surf?” The answer is absolutely yes — and in fact, the non-surfing parts of the week are what many guests remember most vividly.
At Kalon’s Costa Rica all-inclusive surfing resort, the week is structured around the tides — which shift 40 to 60 minutes each day — and built to balance time in the water with time on land. You surf five days. You rest one. And every afternoon is yours to fill however you want.
Each morning starts with a five-star breakfast made from seasonal and local foods to try while surfing in Costa Rica, and from there the day unfolds naturally.

How the Week Actually Flows
The schedule follows the ocean. Breakfast from 7:30 to 9:00. A pool technique session or yoga follows. By late morning you’re in the water. Lunch is served at the beach by our chefs. Afternoons are yours — that’s where exploration fits naturally. Video analysis of your morning session happens around 4:30. Dinner is three courses at one long table at 6:15 — relaxed, unhurried, good wine, the kind of conversation that happens when everyone’s tired in the right way.
Wednesday is the rest day. No surfing, no schedule. Most guests sleep in, get a massage, sit by the infinity pool, or take a trip to one of the nearby waterfalls. The property itself sits on 6.4 acres of rainforest at 1,200 feet of elevation, so even staying at the resort means you’re surrounded by wildlife — toucans, sloths, monkeys, and more. The jungle trail starts right from the property and leads into primary rainforest.
The Right Way to Explore
The local surf culture in Costa Rica is about pushing your limits without over-exertion — and the same applies to how you spend your time outside the water. The guests who get the most out of their week are the ones who don’t try to cram everything in. They surf in the morning, explore or rest in the afternoon, and show up at dinner feeling fulfilled rather than frantic.
That balance isn’t something we have to force. It happens naturally when the schedule follows the tides and everything else is taken care of.
Experience ‘Pura Vida’ at Kalon
At the end of your stay, we hope you’ll take the surfing skills you’ve built and the lessons of ‘pura vida’ back home — that slower pace, the appreciation for simple things done well, the memory of what it felt like to have a week where everything just worked.
