We see it every week at Kalon Surf: couples arrive not sure what to expect, and by Friday they’re talking about when they can come back. Some are celebrating an anniversary or a birthday. Others just want a vacation that’s more than sitting by a pool. A few have booked on impulse — two days before the flight, in one case.
What they all discover is that learning to surf together creates a kind of bonding that’s hard to replicate with a candlelit dinner or a spa day. It’s active, it’s humbling, it’s genuinely fun — and it gives you something to share long after the trip is over.
Why Surfing Works for Couples
Surfing has a quality that most “couples activities” don’t: it gives you shared time and personal space at the same time. You’re in the water together, but you’re each catching your own waves. You’re not competing — everyone is at their own level. You’re just happy for each other.
As Kjeld, Kalon Surf’s founder, puts it: “Being together in the water is a very intimate moment. On one hand, you’re alone catching your own wave, but at the same time, you’re happy for each other. You’re not in a competition — you’re just happy for them because you remember how fun it is to stand up for the first time. Even if you’re now doing bottom turns, you still know how exciting that first wave was, and it opens up this energy where you just want more.”
Kjeld actually taught his wife Silene to surf. She loved it so much she never stopped — she even surfed while pregnant with their sons. Today, surfing is something they do together as a family. It’s a pattern they’ve watched repeat itself with guests over the years: couples come to Kalon, discover surfing together, and then return years later with their kids.

Different Levels? That’s Actually Ideal
One of the most common questions we get from couples is: “We’re at completely different levels — will that be a problem?” The short answer is no. In fact, it’s one of the best setups.
Our coaching is personalized — with a 3:1 guest-to-coach ratio, each person gets individual attention regardless of where they’re starting. If one of you has surfed before and the other hasn’t, you’ll be coached at your own pace but still share the same beach, the same sessions, and the same post-surf moments.
What often happens is that by the end of the week, the gap has narrowed enough that you can actually surf together at home. We’ve seen this play out dozens of times — one partner arrives intermediate while the other is a complete beginner, and by Friday they’re sharing waves on the same break. After Kalon, they can continue surfing together. That’s a pretty meaningful thing to take home from a vacation.
And for couples who are both beginners? Even better. You’ll wipe out together, cheer each other on, and share the rush of standing up for the first time. As one guest wrote on TripAdvisor: “My husband said it was the best days of his life. I thought it would be a close second to our wedding.”
What a Week Looks Like for Couples at Kalon
Kalon isn’t a traditional hotel — it’s an all-inclusive experience designed for a maximum of 10–12 guests per week. That intimacy is part of what makes it work so well for couples. You’re not lost in a crowd. The staff knows your name, your level, your dietary preferences, and what you’re working on in the water.
A typical day might look like this:
Morning: Breakfast together at the communal table, overlooking the Pacific. Then down to the beach for your surf session — three to four hours of coaching, video, and waves. Your coaches are in the water with you the entire time.
Midday: Fresh fruit, lunch on the beach or back at the resort, and time to decompress. Many couples grab a hammock or sit by the infinity pool and just talk — something you rarely make time for at home.
Afternoon: Video analysis of the morning’s surf (this is where the real improvement happens), followed by yoga on the open-air deck, or a couples massage. One complimentary massage is included in every stay — and most couples book additional sessions because the combination of surfing and deep tissue recovery is hard to beat.
Evening: A three-course dinner prepared by our chef, served family-style with the other guests. The food at Kalon is consistently one of the highest-rated parts of the experience. Then sunset from the terrace, a glass of wine, and an early night — because you’ll want to be rested for tomorrow’s waves.
Wednesday is a rest day, which most couples use to explore: horseback riding to a waterfall, a visit to Dominical, zip-lining through the canopy, or simply doing nothing at all.
What Couples Say After Their Week
The reviews speak for themselves. Here’s what real couples have shared:
One couple wrote: “My wife and I had always wanted to learn to surf somewhere where the water is warm. We found Kalon online, and this was definitely the right choice.” They returned for a second trip a year later.
Another guest described the experience: “My wife and I spent last week at Kalon, and had a terrific experience. The best part for us was the in-ocean instruction and videotaped feedback later the same day. We learned a lot and came home with some nice photos and videos to boot.”
A couple who booked on impulse shared: “My boyfriend and I booked our surfing adventure two days before we left. The people who initially were your coach, photographer, coordinator, and cook quickly became new best friends.”
And one guest who came solo loved it so much that he immediately “booked a return trip for both of us in April” — because he couldn’t wait for his wife to experience it too.

We’ve also had couples who came to Kalon early in their relationship and returned years later as a family. Watching a couple who once learned to catch their first whitewash waves come back with their children — and seeing the whole family surf together — is one of the most rewarding things about running this place.
The Practical Details
A few things couples often ask about:
Rooms: Each of our ocean-view rooms is 420 square feet with a private balcony, rain shower, and king-size bed. You’ll have plenty of space and privacy after a full day of surfing.
What’s included: Everything. Airport pickup and return, five days of personalized surf coaching, all meals, snacks and drinks (including beer and wine), one massage each, yoga sessions, and all equipment — boards, rash guards, sunscreen, and reef boots. Check our rates page for current availability and pricing.
Wellness: Beyond the included massage, you can book additional spa treatments — deep tissue, hot stone, bamboo, facials, and couples treatments. Yoga is offered three times a week on our open-air jungle deck.
No surfing experience needed: The majority of our guests are complete beginners. Our coaching method is designed to get you standing on your first day and riding green waves by mid-week. If one of you has more experience, your coach will challenge you at the right level while the other builds fundamentals.
Book Your Couples Surf Trip
Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary, a honeymoon, or just a much-needed reset, a week at Kalon gives couples something that most luxury vacations don’t — a shared experience that actually changes something. You’ll leave surfing, you’ll leave with incredible photos and videos, and you’ll leave with a story that’s a lot more interesting than “we went to a resort.”
