Professional Surf Training

Our surf coaches work with no more than three students at a time, so you get the attention you need to progress. Beginners spend a few immersive hours learning the fundamentals step by step, while more experienced surfers focus on technique, wave selection, and confidence in different conditions. Communication is a priority — your coach will get to know what you need and tailor the sessions accordingly.

Each session is designed to leave you with practical takeaways you can use right away, plus clear cues you can keep working on when you're home — even if you don't live near the ocean.

Bring your technical questions, and talk through any worries you have about the water, timing, or bigger waves. Our surf training is here to help you build confidence in the ocean and feel proud of your progress.

Luxury Accommodations

Kalon Surf is a luxury resort designed so you can fully relax into your week. When you arrive at the 6.4-acre private property, you're surrounded by lush rainforest and wide, uncrowded beaches.

The mansion at the heart of the resort features a spacious gourmet kitchen stocked with fresh fruit, juices, beer, wine, and snacks — so you're always fuelled between sessions. The large dining table makes it easy to connect with the women you're travelling with or others joining from around the world — dinners are served in a relaxed dinner-party style, with great food and conversation that lingers after sunset.

Between surf lessons, unwind in the swimming pool overlooking the Pacific, relax on a lounge chair in the sun, or stretch out in a hammock on the wrap-around balcony while listening to the waves. We provide everything you need for beach and surf time, including towels, a board, a rash guard, sunblock, water, and even water toys.

When it's time to rest, retreat to your spacious private luxury room, complete with an en suite bath and rain shower.

Plenty of Adventures

As if surfing wasn't adventurous enough, you'll find an abundance of things to do if you want to get active between your professional surf camp lessons. For a quick adventure around the property, hop on our private trails and make your way to our gardens where fresh food grows and is harvested for resort meals. Or, you can go mountain biking through the lush landscape to let off some steam at the end of a relaxing day.

Take a tour through the rainforest while traversing over suspension bridges and rappelling through the treetops. Go zip-lining and spot wild animals like monkeys along the way. Cruise on an ATV for a wild ride in the mountains. Or visit the nearby town of Dominical to eat, play, and shop. You can even go whale watching if you visit Kalon Surf sometime in March. There's plenty to choose from — so come with an open mind, good energy, and a willingness to try something new.

Common Questions

Do I need surfing experience to join?

Not at all. Many of our guests have never been on a board before, and our coaches are experienced at helping complete beginners feel comfortable and confident from day one. With a 3:1 guest-to-coach ratio, you receive hands-on guidance tailored to where you are right now — whether that’s catching your first wave or refining your pop-up. Every session is built around your progression.

What skill levels do you coach?

We welcome everyone from complete beginners through to advanced surfers. The difference at Kalon is that we focus on coaching and measurable progression — not just taking you to waves and hoping for the best. That means working on positioning, timing, wave selection, and technique at every level. Even experienced surfers often find that revisiting the fundamentals with a trained eye unlocks their next stage. This is a surf coaching retreat, not a surf safari.

Is this a good choice for women travelling solo?

Absolutely. Many of our guests arrive on their own, and it's one of the most common pieces of positive feedback we receive. Kalon welcomes solo travellers, couples, and small groups — but with a maximum of 20 guests at any time, the atmosphere is always intimate and welcoming. You'll share meals at the communal dining table and bond in the water during the day, while your 420-square-foot private suite gives you complete privacy when you want to recharge.

What’s included in the all-inclusive week?

Your stay includes seven nights in a private luxury suite, five days of professional surf coaching with video analysis, all meals (farm-to-table breakfast, beach or resort lunch, and a nightly three-course dinner), snacks and drinks including beer and wine, airport transfers from San José (SJO), a mid-week massage, 3 yoga sessions (entry level so all can join), and all surf equipment including boards and rash guards. The only additional costs are optional off-site excursions such as zip-lining or horseback riding.

Do I need to bring my own surfboard or gear?

No. We provide high-quality boards matched to your height, ability, and the conditions on the day — typically from Firewire and Slater Designs. Rash guards, sunblock, and beach essentials are included as well. Just bring your swimwear and personal items.

How many guests are at the resort each week?

We host a maximum of 20 guests at any time, maintaining a 3:1 guest-to-coach ratio in the water. This keeps surf sessions focused and personal while giving the week an intimate, relaxed feel — more like staying at a private beach house than a large resort.

How do I get to Kalon Surf from the airport?

Fly into San José, Costa Rica (airport code SJO). From there, we coordinate your transfer — either a scenic private drive to Dominical or a short domestic flight to the Southern Zone. Once you’ve booked, everything is organised for you.

Treat Yourself

You've earned more than just a vacation.

Learn to Surf: An Investment for Life

Our surf coaches have the time to give you individual attention because we keep groups small with a max of 20 guests and a 3:1 guest to surf coach ratio. We'll help match you with a surfboard that fits your current level and goals — often Firewire or Slater Design — and take you to uncrowded beaches so you can focus on learning and enjoying the experience.

Surfing at Kalon is about more than catching waves — it's a shared experience that builds confidence and connection. Whether you're here solo, with a friend, or as part of a group, the camaraderie in our small groups makes every session memorable. Our surfing classes for beginners are designed to build real confidence, with tailored instruction and constructive feedback so you can progress at your own pace.

Beyond the surf, our camp integrates mindfulness practices and yoga into the weekly rhythm — helping you connect with the ocean while finding a sense of calm and focus. Located on the South Pacific coast of Costa Rica, with stunning beaches, reliable swells, vibrant local culture, and a team dedicated to making every detail effortless, this is simply one of the best surf destinations in the world.

Don't spend another day just dreaming about surfing. Contact Kalon Surf today to learn more about our all-inclusive surf packages and to book your trip. All you'll have to do is show up with your toothbrush and your favourite swimwear — we handle everything else.
