Kalon Surf
“I would and will do it again in a heartbeat.”
A well-designed, tastefully decorated and ideally located property that overlooks the ocean and offers a spectacular view of the Costa Rican sunset, which is consistently beautiful every single night!
Charlie, the concierge/manager, is organized and friendly and helps with any request, large or small. He is genuinely passionate about the guest experience.
Juan, the chef, is a true artist and creates gourmet dishes with local ingredients in order to keep your tastebuds satisfied and your energy up for surfing. The kitchen is open for snacks and drinks at any time.
The massage I received at the spa was one of the best I've ever received, and the focus was on releasing tension in specific muscles due to surfing.
I was totally intimidated by surfing. 20 minutes in on the first day I could see that my past experience was because the level of instruction had been terrible and the site itself not ideal for beginners.
And of course, the surfing itself! I had tried surfing in Indonesia to disastrous results. Roberto, Andres and Henry love surfing and love teaching others how to surf. The technique they use had all of us who were beginners standing up on our boards the first day, and improving steadily from there. The beach we surfed at had ideal conditions for beginners as well as those with more experience. The daily video analysis, filmed by Diego, was also invaluable and gets you to the point where you can critique yourself. Above all, they kept us safe!
Lastly, Kalon offers a unique opportunity to meet people you wouldn't normally meet and quickly form a tight knit group through your shared experiences! Down time away from surfing is spent chilling by the pool and having drinks, watching movies, talking and laughing. By the end, I felt like I was saying goodbye to family, including the staff.
I would and will do it again in a heartbeat!
