Luxury Surf Resort
Costa Rica
A boutique all-inclusive resort where world-class surf coaching meets the comfort and care you deserve. Ten rooms. One beach. Your best week.
Not a Typical Surf Camp
Most surf camps are hostels with lessons. Kalon Surf is a luxury resort built from the ground up around one idea: that learning to surf should feel like the best week of your life, not a compromise between adventure and comfort.
When we first visited this property, it was the last stop on a day of looking at land. The road up the hill felt like driving into Jurassic Park — beautiful, wild, and a little uncertain. A tree had fallen the night before, so we got out of the car and walked the rest of the way. When we reached the front of the property and saw the view — all the way to Manuel Antonio, the Pacific stretching out below — Silene and I just looked at each other and laughed. We knew.
That was the beginning. An architect drew something up, and once we saw what this place could become, we committed. Building in Costa Rica was its own jungle — but it made us stronger, more savvy. We were young. When we look back at the photos, we cannot believe how young. But what we built is something our guests get to enjoy every single day. And that view still stops us. Every morning, every sunset — it is still breathtaking.
Today, Kalon Surf is ten accommodations on 6.5 acres of rainforest, a 3:1 guest-to-coach ratio, three-course dinners from an open kitchen, a mid-week massage included, and uncrowded beaches where your only company is howler monkeys and the occasional whale. Whether you have never touched a surfboard or you are chasing your first barrel, we meet you exactly where you are.

Our Culinary Experience
A Method, Not Just a Lesson
Our coaching program was built over ten years of working with beginners, intermediates, and advanced surfers. It starts with dry training and pool practice — building muscle memory in a controlled environment before you ever enter the ocean.
In the water, we prioritize beach breaks for safety and progression. The 3:1 guest-to-coach ratio means personal attention, not crowd management. After each session, video analysis helps you see exactly what to work on — even beginners benefit from watching their own footage.
We provide quality helmets for anyone who wants them (and many pro surfers use them now). We do not push you into waves or ruin your photos. We teach you to catch your own.

Built to Evolve
Kalon started with six rooms. What is now the Toucan Bungalow was originally our home — Silene and I lived on the property. It became the office, and eventually a guest favorite in its own right. When guests fell in love with it, that told us something. So we built the junior suites. Then the villa.
During COVID, we were closed for eight months. We kept every team member on salary — in Costa Rica, there were no government subsidies for families, and sending people home was not something we were willing to do. Instead, we used that time. We trained the team, rethought our structure, and decided we would come out of this stronger than we went in.
With no budget for construction, we cut bamboo from the property, dried it ourselves, and built a yoga deck, a spa, and a surf shed. It made the property feel bigger and gave us a blueprint for what Kalon could become. The spa had a beautiful ocean view — but most guests had their eyes closed during massages. So we moved the spa to a jungle setting and turned that spot into a junior suite where guests could actually enjoy the view. That is how Kalon grows: by paying attention to what our guests love, and building from there.
We went from six rooms and 14 staff to ten accommodations and 35 people — and earned our ICT five-star certification along the way. Neither Silene nor I come from hospitality. We come from watching, listening, and caring enough to keep improving.

Dinner Party, Not Restaurant
Every evening, our chefs prepare a three-course meal from our open kitchen. Fresh tuna from the coast, organic chicken from the mountains, produce from farms down the road. The table is communal — you sit down as guests and leave as friends.
Breakfast fuels your surf session with local Costa Rican coffee from the Dota region and a rotation of fresh options. Lunch meets you wherever you are — at the resort or packed for the beach. Snacks, smoothies, beer, and wine are available throughout the day.
More About Our Food
Surf Hard, Rest Well
Hours in the ocean build strength but also take a toll. Our yoga and pilates hybrid classes are designed specifically for surfers — they target the muscles you just used and prepare you for tomorrow's session.
Every guest receives a mid-week massage included in the all-inclusive package. Our spa room opens onto the jungle with ocean views, and the combination of surf fatigue and skilled hands means most guests are asleep within minutes.
The infinity pool overlooking the rainforest and ocean is where most evenings begin — sunset drinks, conversation, and the kind of quiet that cities cannot offer.

Where the Jungle Meets the Pacific
Kalon Surf sits at 1,200 feet elevation near Dominical on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast — the beginning of the Osa Peninsula, one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The property is surrounded by 6.5 acres of primary rainforest, with sloths, monkeys, toucans, and scarlet macaws as regular visitors.
The area has long, uncrowded beach breaks ideal for learning and progression, without the crowds and development of Guanacaste or the central Pacific. Dominical itself is a small surf town with local restaurants, a craft beer bar on the beach, and zero mass tourism.
Fly into San Jose (SJO). We pick you up and drive you the scenic three-hour route to the resort in one of our SUVs. From arrival to departure, every transfer and detail is handled.
