What to Expect From Your All Inclusive Surf Week at Kalon

Your Costa Rica all-inclusive surfing experience at Kalon follows the tides — so no two days look exactly the same, and you're always in the water at the best time. Mornings typically start with coffee on the terrace and a breakfast worth lingering over, before a pool technique session, pilates and yoga, or video analysis to loosen up and focus. Then you head to the beach with your coaches for hours of surf coaching on uncrowded waves, with just three guests per coach.

Lunch might be served right on the beach between sessions or back at the resort — it depends on the day. Either way, our chefs prepare it fresh, and you don't think about it. Afternoons are yours. Some guests book a waterfall hike, ziplining, or horseback ride. Others sit by the pool with a book or disappear into their room for a nap. There's no wrong answer — and that's the point. Everything at Kalon is designed so you feel comfortable, unhurried, and genuinely looked after.

Evenings are the part people talk about most. Three-course dinners at one long table, good wine, and the kind of conversation that happens when everyone's had a full day of surf and sun. Couples, solo travelers, small groups — everyone finds their place. On Fridays, the week wraps up around the fire pit with drinks and stories. Our luxury surf camp is social without being forced, and quiet when you need it to be.

About 60% of our guests have never surfed before — and they're catching waves by day two. The rest are intermediate and advanced surfers who come for the consistent conditions and the kind of personalized coaching they can't get at home. Whether you're working on your first pop-up or refining your bottom turn, our coaches adapt to where you actually are — with video analysis and structured progression that helps you keep improving long after your surf vacation ends. If you're wondering whether all-inclusive in costa rica is worth it, this is what we built Kalon for.

Costa Rica has fantastic year-round surfing conditions, so there's no wrong time to come. We recommend travel insurance for peace of mind — but the only thing you really need to bring is yourself.

Questions About Your Surf Week

What is a typical day like at an all-inclusive surf retreat?

Days at Kalon revolve around the tides, so the schedule shifts slightly each day to catch the best conditions. A typical day starts with breakfast, followed by yoga, a pool technique session, or video analysis. Then it's time for a long surf session at one of our uncrowded beaches — with a freshly prepared lunch served right on the beach, surrounded by palm trees. Evenings wind down with a three-course gourmet dinner at the long wooden table in a relaxed, social setting. Wednesday is your mid-week rest day, and Saturdays are travel days.

How fit do I need to be to join a surf week?

You don't need to be especially fit to join. If you can comfortably go up a few flights of stairs, take long walks, or stay active in daily life, you'll likely do just fine. Our Costa Rica surf coaching is highly personalized, with a maximum of three guests per coach, so you're never pushed beyond your level. We use pool sessions to refine your paddle technique and pop-up before heading into the waves, and there's a built-in mid-week rest day to recharge. The goal isn't exhaustion — it's steady progress and enjoying your time in the water.

Can beginners learn to surf in one week at a surf camp?

Absolutely. Many of our guests arrive as complete beginners. Our coaching combines video analysis, in-water instruction, pool sessions for paddle technique, and a step-by-step progression — starting in the whitewater and gradually building toward open green waves. Most first-timers are standing up and riding waves within the first few days.

Are all-inclusive surf camps in Costa Rica safe for solo travelers?

Very much so. Many of our guests arrive solo, and it's one of the things that makes the week feel so easy and welcoming. With a maximum of 20 guests per week, shared meals, and time in the water together, connections happen naturally — without forced group activities. It's social by nature, but there's always space for privacy when you want it.

What is included in a luxury all-inclusive surf resort in Costa Rica?

At Kalon, everything is taken care of as part of the all-inclusive surf adventure: airport transfers from San José, seven nights of ocean-view accommodation, five days of surf coaching, all meals and snacks, beer and wine, yoga sessions, a mid-week massage, pool technique sessions, video analysis, surfboard use (Firewire and Slater Designs), rashguards, sunscreen, and all on-property amenities. The only extras are optional tours, additional massages, and liquor.

When is the best time of year for a surf vacation in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has waves year-round — it simply depends on what you're looking for. The dry season (November–April) brings consistent northwest swells and clear skies. The green season (May–October) delivers south and southwest swells, warmer water, and lush jungle landscapes. There's also "veranito - little summer", a mid-year stretch of sunnier weather that often appears during the green season. There's truly no bad seasons to visit for surfing.

Is rainy season a good time to visit Costa Rica for surfing?

Yes. What many people call "rainy season" is known locally as green season — when everything turns lush, vibrant, and beautifully alive. Costa Rica has countless microclimates, and here on the southern Pacific coast, most days still bring blue skies and warm temperatures, with the possibility of a short, refreshing shower near sunset. South and southwest swells can be excellent during this period, crowds are often even lighter, and the landscape is at its most dramatic. In fact, it's a favorite season for many of our returning guests.

Do surf camps provide surfboards and equipment?

Yes. We're official partners with Firewire Surfboards and Slater Designs, giving you access to a premium quiver — from soft-tops for beginners to performance boards for more advanced surfers. Your coaches will match you with the right board for your level and the day's conditions. We also provide rashguards and reef-safe sunscreen. There's no need to bring your own board — and we usually recommend you don't, to avoid airline damage.

Your Week Starts Here

Booking your vacation shouldn't add complexity to your life. At Kalon, everything is taken care of — from the airport pickup to the last sunset — so you can focus on what matters: surfing, relaxing, and reconnecting.
