Our family surf camp in Costa Rica is designed around experience, not performance or perfection. This gives families valuable time to work towards their goals and to make unforgettable memories of catching their first waves together.

Our family surf camp in Costa Rica is designed around experience, not performance or perfection. This gives families valuable time to work towards their goals and to make unforgettable memories of catching their first waves together. Taking on the challenge of learning how to surf is one of the few travel experiences where parents and children start at the very same level!

When our co-founder, Kjeld, first arrived in Costa Rica back in 2010, he didn’t have a fully formed plan or strategy, but evolved the feel and ambiance of the property and surf camps organically by focusing on one goal: what would give guests the most meaningful experience? For context on why a week here feels different, see our piece on the benefits of family surf vacations.

Why Surfing Is a Great Family Activity

There are countless sports and activities with ingrained hierarchies, but surfing removes them from the equation. Parents aren’t the experts, and kids aren’t the only beginners, so everyone is learning as equals. This is one of the most significant benefits of family surf vacations, because it builds:

  • Empathy and encouragement
  • A sense of collective achievement
  • Shared progression and recognition

The differences guests feel can be profound, where adults and children see each other in a new light, as people who are open to learning new things and who can celebrate each other for their own unique skills.

How Surfing Coaching Works for Families

Kalon’s surf coaching is intentionally structured, without being rigid. This is, after all, a vacation! We’re all about relaxed introductions to surfing and building confidence naturally as the week unfolds.

Our head surf coach Freddy and his team can offer endless beginner surf tips for families. As an idea, your week might begin with:

  • Technique-based coaching around the pool
  • Practicing pop-ups on the beach before entering the ocean
  • Guidance on how to time and watch for waves
  • Developing confidence in the water and on the board

This personalized coaching adapts to each family member’s pace, and the absence of pressure ensures everyone will see tangible progress by the end of their stay, regardless of their starting level. Our coaching approach is beginner-friendly by design. We work on consistency over intensity as well as ensuring each session is enjoyable and supportive.

Why the Environment at Kalon Is Perfect for Learning to Surf

Learning anything new depends on great coaching, your willingness to listen, and the setting you’re in. We’re fortunate to be next to the gorgeous Dominical coastline, with warm water, year-round surf conditions, and steady beginner-friendly waves, making learning accessible rather than intimidating.

Back at the property, the environment has been created to support recovery and reflection, with quiet spaces to relax, shared meals to start and round off each day, and mindful activities like yoga overlooking the jungle. Surfing is central but only one element of the Kalon experience, with waterfall hikes, rainforest tours, and walks under the jungle canopy easily accessible from the property.

Families often mention how quickly this balance of surf coaching and rest simplifies their routines, encourages deeper conversations, and helps each person become more present. Our guest Tony described it like this: “Absolutely the best experience I’ve done, probably ever. Will remember you all forever. Kalon team is one big family and it felt like we were visiting our long lost family during our visit.”

What Are the Accommodation Options for a Family Surf Vacation in Costa Rica?

We have ten luxurious accommodations at our resort, which is an open-air property offering cooling ocean breezes and panoramic views over miles of Costa Rican coastline. Families often opt for The Bungalow, a private jungle retreat with two bedrooms and ensuite rain showers, a patio, a garden, and a mini fridge.

For those planning a luxury stay, The Villa is an incredible option, designed by co-founder Silene after a decade of learning what our guests love most! This room’s king beds, plunge pool, and patio provide enhanced privacy and space.
