The best surf lessons in Costa Rica depend on how you find it easiest to learn. Some people prefer one-on-one coaching; others thrive in a small group where they can share the wins while still getting plenty of individual attention. Surfing is an individual sport, and there is no wrong way to start. At Kalon Surf, we keep our coaching groups small, so guests get the personalized feedback they value alongside the camaraderie that so often turns into friendship.

The Differences Between Group and Private Coaching

Format Best For What to Expect
Private one-on-one Guests who want intensive coaching or are working on a specific skill Individual feedback, a fully customizable focus, and one-on-one supervision
Small group Beginners, couples, families, friends, and solo guests who enjoy a shared experience Personalized video feedback, shared encouragement, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere

How a Small Group Can Speed Up Progress

It is easy to assume private lessons are always the fastest route. In practice, watching other learners at a similar level and hearing a coach explain something several different ways is just as valuable. A shared session lets everyone move at their own pace toward a common goal, without competition. Guests notice each other’s mistakes, apply the coach’s advice to their own surfing, and celebrate breakthroughs together.

It is also why so many Kalon guests return year after year and make lifelong friends. The conversation rarely stops when the session ends, and learning to surf as an adult feels far less intimidating surrounded by people on the same journey.

What to Expect From Small Group Coaching

Our groups have a maximum of three guests per coach, so everyone benefits from the team’s expertise without feeling isolated or pressured. Because most learners do not yet know how to read a surf forecast, each session starts with the coaches doing it for them:

  • Assessing the swell, tide, and wind direction
  • Choosing the best spots along the shoreline that day
  • Adapting the coaching to the group’s experience

That might mean time on the sand working on technique, or heading out when gentle, rolling waves make an ideal chance at a first pop-up. Good coaching teaches the skills and builds an environment where guests feel in great hands. Kalon’s coaching will always be built around small groups, giving every guest the time and attention to progress and enjoy the process.
