Kalon’s Costa Rica surf resort offers a very different experience from a boutique hotel. It’s a private estate focused on privacy, calm, and a thoughtful balance between surf coaching and downtime.
When Silene and I built Kalon, we wanted something that didn’t exist yet — a place where everything is handled, but nothing feels scripted. With a maximum of twenty guests and a mix of ocean-view rooms, junior suites, and jungle bungalows, the setting is intimate without ever feeling crowded. Many of our solo guests find that shared surf sessions and long evening dinners create genuine, unforced connections — the kind you don’t get at a standard hotel.
Choosing Accommodation for Your Costa Rican Surf Escape
Kalon is a world away from a conventional ‘resort.’ We’re a fully inclusive ocean-view retreat designed around a single goal: making our guests happy. Traditional all-inclusive resorts offer fixed structures, but here, the rhythm of the week is guided without being rigid — it follows the tides, which shift 40–60 minutes each day. Boutique hotels may suit travelers who prefer to make their own arrangements and are comfortable getting around Costa Rica from surf resorts independently.
What Makes a Luxury Surf Resort Different From a Hotel?
At its core, an exclusive surf resort brings together all the elements of a great surfing getaway: comfortable accommodation, personalized coaching, and world-class hospitality with a genuine, warm vibe. We remove every potential stumbling block or point of friction to ensure each guest has an unforgettable time.
This begins the moment you land in San José, where our driver meets you at the airport and takes you along the coast to Dominical — a scenic three-hour drive that most guests later say was the moment they started to decompress. From there, your week of surfing, dining, resting, and repeating starts, with all the space you need to explore or slow down.
Contrasts Between Surf Resorts and Boutique Hotels
Every surfer and traveler will have their own expectations, and we know that, for some, a traditional hotel may better suit their travel style. No accommodation can be everything for everyone.
If you’re considering a hotel, it’s worth thinking about some of the details: how you’ll travel between locations and explore Costa Rica safely, the distances between your hotel, surf spots, and places you’d like to visit, and what’s included versus what isn’t.
It’s also worth researching Costa Rica’s surf conditions and shorelines. Some beaches with stronger, faster waves aren’t suited to beginner surfers, while others can become crowded during peak season.
Who Is Kalon’s Surf Resort Designed For?
We created Kalon as a place that embraces the nature we’re surrounded by — set high above the coastline at 1,200 feet on a 6.4-acre private estate, with open-air spaces, miles of jungle around us, and ocean waves below. Our guests come from every corner of the world. About 60% are first-time surfers. Over 65% travel solo. Most are between 30 and 65, lead full lives back home, and come to Kalon to truly unplug.
What connects them isn’t skill level — it’s mindset. They’re typically easy-going people who want the ease and intentionality we’re known for: personalized coaching at a 3:1 ratio, three-course dinners at one long table, and the freedom to shape their days however they want. Some fill every afternoon with waterfall hikes, kayaking in the mangroves, or wildlife excursions. Others do absolutely nothing beyond the pool and their private balcony — and that’s perfect too.
Guidance on Planning a Perfect Costa Rican Surfing Holiday
Costa Rica is a great destination for travelers who want to combine surfing with rainforests and beaches, and for visitors who’d also like to spend time in San José seeing the city’s markets, museums, and theaters. If you’d like advice on exploring the country after your time at Kalon, we’re always happy to help.
