Yes — January is one of the most popular months to visit Costa Rica, and for good reason. It’s peak dry season: consistently sunny, warm, and ideal for surfing, hiking, and exploring.

Weather

January is the heart of Costa Rica’s dry season (verano). Along the Pacific coast near Dominical, expect blue skies, daytime temperatures in the low to mid-80s°F (27–30°C), and very little rain. The Papagayo winds that begin in December continue into January, keeping the air fresh and comfortable. Evenings are pleasant — a light layer is enough.

Costa Rica has over a thousand microclimates, so conditions vary by region even in dry season. The northern Pacific (Guanacaste) tends to be significantly hotter and windier in January — temperatures regularly push into the mid-90s°F, and the landscape is already turning brown. Inland areas like the Central Valley are cooler and can see occasional drizzle. The central and south Pacific coast around Dominical sits in a sheltered zone — warm but noticeably more comfortable than the north, with calmer winds that make it possible to surf through the middle of the day.

Water temperature sits around 78°F (25–26°C). No wetsuit needed.

Surfing

January delivers clean, consistent waves on the Pacific coast. Swells are moderate — typically chest to shoulder height — with offshore morning winds creating well-groomed wave faces. These are ideal conditions for beginners building confidence and intermediates working on technique.

At Kalon Surf, our coaches select the best break each day based on conditions. With uncrowded lineups and a 3:1 coaching ratio, most guests are riding green waves by mid-week — regardless of their starting level.

What to know

January is high season. Flights and accommodation fill up early, and prices are at their peak. If you’re planning a January trip to Kalon, we recommend booking at least 3–6 months in advance — we only host 10–20 guests per week, and January weeks tend to sell out.

The upside of high season: guaranteed sunshine, optimal surf conditions, and the landscape is still lush from the tail end of the green season rains.

Beyond surfing

January weather is perfect for excursions — waterfall hikes to Nauyaca, wildlife spotting in Manuel Antonio National Park, ATV tours through the mountains near Uvita, or snorkeling at Caño Island. Humpback whales from the northern hemisphere are present along the Pacific coast through March.
