August is the last month of veranito — Costa Rica’s “little summer” within the green season — and it delivers. Sunny days, consistent surf, the whale watching season in full swing, and a jungle so green it almost glows. Some of our most memorable weeks at Kalon happen in August.

As always with Costa Rica, conditions depend on where you are. The country has over a thousand microclimates — inland areas and the northern Pacific coast tend to see more rain during these months, while the central and south Pacific coast around Dominical stays drier and sunnier. Veranito here is essentially dry season with a greener landscape.

Weather

Veranito conditions continue through August, though you may notice the first signs of the deeper green season approaching toward the end of the month. Around Dominical, mornings and early afternoons are typically sunny and warm in the mid-80s°F (28–32°C). Afternoon showers become slightly more likely late in August compared to June and July, but they’re short-lived and refreshing — not all-day rain.

The mountain microclimate continues to protect the surf from wind. While the north Pacific coast can be blown out and difficult to surf midday, the Dominical area stays calm — we surf through the day without wind issues.

Water temperature: 78°F (25–26°C). No wetsuit.

Surfing

Consistent SSW swells continue — some of the best surf of the year. Waves have more power than dry season but remain manageable for coached beginners. Intermediates and advancing surfers have plenty to work with. The lineups are uncrowded. The surf is reliable.

At Kalon Surf, our coaches know August conditions well — they select the best break daily based on tide, swell, and wind, and match you with the right board from our Firewire and Slater Designs quiver.

What to know

August is still veranito — effectively dry season conditions with all the benefits of the greener landscape. Flights are typically less expensive than December–March, and availability is easier than peak season. It’s popular with families (summer holidays) but nowhere near the January–March crowds. Booking 2–3 months in advance is usually sufficient.

The reason to come in August isn’t about saving money — it’s about getting conditions that many guests genuinely prefer. Return guests and experienced surfers gravitate toward the June–August veranito window because the surf is better, the scenery is more vibrant, and the atmosphere is more relaxed.

Beyond surfing

Whale watching is at its peak in August — southern hemisphere humpback whales are all along the coast near Marino Ballena. A boat tour on your Wednesday day off is highly recommended.

The waterfalls are at their most powerful as the rivers are full. ATV tours through the green mountains near Uvita, snorkeling at Caño Island, or simply a day by the pool — August has options for every energy level.
