At our surf resort in Costa Rica, the idea of “booking surf lessons” works a bit differently than you might expect. At Kalon, we focus on individualized coaching designed for real progression over the course of the week — not a one-off lesson where you stand up once and that’s the story.
Led by Head Surf Coach Freddy Mora, who has been coaching for over fifteen years, we provide a full week of structured surf guidance balanced with relaxation and downtime, in small groups so you’ll never be competing for a wave. While there are surf schools on the public beaches, and you might need to consider getting around Costa Rica from surf resorts to reach them, at Kalon we manage everything for the whole of your stay.
What’s the Difference Between Surf Lessons and Coaching?
Coaching is fully adapted to your level. About 60% of Kalon guests are first-time surfers, and another 20% have only tried once or twice. You’ll feel right at home, whatever your experience in the water.
| Surfing Lessons | Surf Coaching at Kalon |
|---|---|
| Normally one-offs, or pay as you go | Organized over the week, based on your starting point and confidence |
| Generalized and usually centered around the basics | Customized to every guest — no need to worry about packing surf gear for luxury surf resorts |
| Casual, short-term experiences with limited progression | Consistent guidance with daily video analysis to refine your technique |
What Can Guests Expect From a Week of Surf Coaching?
Our approach is built to help you enjoy the process. You’ll surf five of your seven days, with daily video analysis and feedback, in groups of up to three guests per coach. That 3:1 ratio ensures our team can tailor every aspect to build your confidence as the week progresses.
It’s less about ticking off a lesson and more about settling into a rhythm, so the skills you’re building start to feel natural and stay with you well beyond the week. We use a color-band system tied to specific technical focus points — foot positioning, chest posture, visual tracking, knee bend, hip movement — so both you and your coach always know exactly where you are and what to work on next.
Worried about an intensive crash course? Don’t be. We concentrate on repetition, not overwhelm. Wednesday is a full rest day, and we also offer midweek massages and yoga sessions designed specifically around the muscles and movement patterns that surfers use.
How Much Surfing Progress Can I Make in One Week?
Your first week shouldn’t be about perfection — it’s about developing a proper foundation, with each new skill reinforcing the last. Our coaches work in the pool, at the beach, and in the ocean, starting in the whitewater for newer surfers where you can catch twenty to thirty waves in a single session without facing anything you’re not ready for.
We begin with tried-and-tested techniques: the 1-2-3 pop-up without using your knee, building balance and posture, and getting you moving with confidence. More advanced surfers are guided just as carefully, with coaching customized to what you’d like to learn and where we can see the biggest opportunity to make a difference.
What Surfing Gear Do I Need for a Week at a Costa Rica Resort?
Bring yourself, comfortable clothes, and swimwear. That’s it. When we say Kalon is all-inclusive, we mean it. You’ll pick from about sixty boards to suit every style and level, or our coaches can choose for you and recommend upgrades as you progress through the week.
You’ll find full beach setups with fresh fruit, water, shade, a team member capturing video for your analysis (and memories), and surf helmets. If you’d like to learn more about coaching at Kalon, you’re always welcome to reach out.
